MEASURING A REFRACTIVE-INDEX AT HIGH-PRESSURE IN A DIAMOND-ANVIL CELL

A technique is suggested for measuring the refractive index of isotropic materials in an apparatus with diamond anvils using an interference-polarization microscope. The refraction index of a methanol-ethanol mixture versus pressure has been measured for pressures from 0 to 5.0 GPa with an error delta n = +/-0.0035 at P = 2.5 GPa, and of a basalt glass at a pressure of up to 2.5 GPa with an error less than delta n = 0.045 at the maximum pressure.
