Effects of captopril (CPT) on lymphocytes of experimental animals were studied in vitro and in vivo. CPT (25 mug ml-1) suppressed concanavalin A (Con A)-stimulated interleukin 2 (IL-2) production from mouse helper T (Th) cells and at concentrations of 12.5, 50 mug ml-1 enhanced the activity of mouse nonspecific suppressor T (Ts) cells induced by Con A in vitro. CPT at doses of 10, 40 mg kg-1 daily orally for 5 d suppressed the proliferation of mouse T lymphocytes stimulated by Con A. CPT at a dose of 15 mg kg-1 daily orally for 18 d increased MRCOX8+ (Ts/c) cell count and decreased W3/25+ (Th)/MRCOX8+ cell ratio in adjuvant-induced arthritic rats.
