The eyes of apparently healthy 650 cattle and 1842 buffaloes which included those sacrificed for human consumption as well as those necropsied were screened. The retinae and optic nerves of 56 cattle and 166 buffaloes having eye lesions were subjected to histopathological examination. The lesions encountered in the retina included retinal congestion, retinal haemorrhages, retinitis and retinal degeneration. Optic neuritis and optic nerve degeneration were the main lesions recorded in the optic nerves.
