Children with epilepsy frequently display cognitive sequelae that are overlooked or misunderstood by educational personnel, yet may adversely impact academic performance. This paper reviews common cognitive-behavioral characteristics of children with epilepsy, typical effects of anti-convulsant medications, and various other periictal phenomena and their relative impact on cognitive functioning and school achievement. The various roles of school psychologists are also examined including working in a collaborative effort for purposes of inservice education, direct service to students with epilepsy and coordination of treatment interventions with the medical community.
