A real time adaptive control scheme for a single degree of freedom (SDOF) vehicle model with active suspension is compared with stochastic optimal control model for asphalt road random input. The active suspension is adapted to the changes in the dynamics of the vehicle, changes in vehicle velocity, and different types of random road (or terrain) inputs using model reference adaptive control (MRAC). Computer simulation results of both the methods are discussed. An adaptive control would give very good performance even for large variations in vehicle dynamics and operating conditions, whereas an optimal control would give good performance at the specified time invariant model.
