USE OF A GUANIDINIUM IONOPHORE IN A HYDROGEN SULFITE-SELECTIVE ELECTRODE

A liquid membrane-based anion-selective electrode for hydrogen sulfite has been developed using a guanidinium ionophore in a poly(vinyl chloride) membrane. At pH 6.00, a logarithmic response to hydrogen sulfite in the range 5.0 x 10(-5) to 0.500 M is observed with a detection limit of 3.9 (+/-0.3) x 10(-5) M (n = 6). The electrode demonstrated minimal response to other anions, with perchlorate (K-HSO3-,ClO4-(pot) = 7.0 X 10(-3)) and salicylate (K-HSO3-,salicylate(pot) = 4.6 X 10(-3)) being the two strongest interferents. H-1-NMR complexation was used to study the interaction between hydrogen sulfite and the ionophore in this novel HSO3- sensor.
