Temperature patterns on the back of a thin stainless steel heated plate during pool nucleate boiling of water have been measured with thermochromic liquid crystal. It is shown that spatial variations which are large fractions of the mean wall superheat are to be expected in many experimental and industrial applications of boiling. They can cause errors in the measurement of the mean wall superheat by some conventional methods. Established mechanistic models which assume uniformity of wall superheat cannot represent correctly the processes controlling the density and intermittent activity of bubble nucleation sites on walls of finite thermal conductivity. The essential features of a realistic model are described.
