FREQUENCY-DEPENDENCE OF THE RAYLEIGH DEPOLARIZATION RATIO AND POLARIZABILITY ANISOTROPY OF CYCLOHEXANE

Equipment for measurements, at temperatures up to almost-equal-to 90-degrees-C, of the vapour-phase Rayleigh depolarization ratios of relatively involatile, and weakly anisotropic species is described. The high-temperature capability made it possible to extend earlier observations on cyclohexane at 441.6 to 632.8 nm, with and without exclusion of the extraneous vibrational Raman contribution to the scattered intensities. Analysis of the results indicates that both the true depolarization ratio and the vibrational Raman contribution are virtually independent of frequency over this range, conclusions that are of interest in relation to recent theoretical calculations.
