Each of the articles in this issue addresses some important topics that have not been studied systematically by anyone else. The usual assertions of authors that their research breaks new ground are in this case fully justified. Very little has been published on the unique characteristics (if any) of surveillance in post-communist societies. My postscript is an attempt to provide some context or a map on which the current research could be sited. © The author(s).
