Reaction of various O-benzylidene acetals of sugars in which the acetal ring spans two secondary hydroxyl groups, with NBS, affords, in general, isomeric bromodeoxy sugar benzoates. In the presence of a nearby participating function (hydroxyl, ester) the acetal ring opening may be accompanied by rearrangement leading to the incorporation of bromine at a carbon atom other than those involved in the acetal ring. © 1969, American Chemical Society.
