COHERENT INTERACTIONS OF AXIONS WITH MICROWAVE PHOTONS IN A RESONANT-CAVITY TO SEARCH FOR COSMIC AXIONS

摘要
A new scheme to search for cosmic axions is proposed, which utilizes the coherent nature of the axions: The cosmic or galactic halo axions having a long de Broglie wavelength (over 100m) due to its small momentum coherently interact with artificially driven microwave photons in a resonant cavity, producing an interference term with low beat-frequency. By calculating the autocorrelation of the low frequency components of the output power picked up from the cavity, this coherent interference term is selectively enhanced while the incoherent background noise arising from the amplifier system is strongly suppressed. This would provide a much more efficient scheme to search for the cosmic axions than the conventional amplification-heterodyne-methods without driven photons in a cavity.
