Summary: Latin square designs were used to study the effects of inhalation anaesthetics on small numbers of experimental subjects. One study concerned the influence of nitrous oxide on the ability to learn material presented immediately after inhalation, and the ability to recall material learned immediately before inhalation. A second study compared the effects of intermittent inhalation of nitrous oxide, trichloroethylene and methoxyflurane with respect to mental performance and mitigation of ischaemic pain. The power of the experimental design is revealed from the relatively small number of results available. © 1969 John Sherratt and Son Ltd.
