THE EFFECT OF THE CIGARETTE FILTER MODIFICATION ON THE CONTENT OF CHEMICAL CARCINOGENS IN THE CIGARETTE-SMOKE AND GENOTOXICITY OF ITS CONDENSATE

Cigarettes with the experimental (EF) and commercial (CF) filters have been studied for the content of chemical carcinogens and mutagenicity of the cigarette smoke condensate (CSC). As compared to CF, EF produced on the basis of water insoluble complex of iron with diethylthyocarbamade was by 30 % more effective against benzo (a) pyrene, by 70-80 % against benzo (e) pyrene, benzo (g, h, i) perilene and pyrene than CF and retained all the amount of benzo (k) fluoranthene, coronene and chrysene. EF retained also about 50 % more Cd and N-nitrosonornicotine, but it was 1.5-2 times less effective against all other measured tobaccospecific and volatile nitrosocompounds. CSC mutagenicity values evaluated by the Ames test were the same after CF and EF whereas the level of somatic mosaicism induced in Drosophila by CSC after CF was somewhat above that after EF. The combined method of the evaluation of cigarette filters anticarcinogenic properties has been discussed.
