The mathematical preliminary work for laying out the speed and throughput rate of a new tandem mill is described and the possibilities of further extension are assessed. To get an idea on the layout of the tandem mill, the machine times for rolling a medium coil were at first calculated. On the basis of some more estimated values for a medium dimension, a theoretical throughput rate and therefrom the necessary maximum rolling speed could be roughly estimated. It was found that no further increase of throughput rate could be achieved by increasing the final speed beyond certain limits.
