摘要：

The width of the confidence interval for the standard deviation of a normal distribution is inherently a random variable. Its expectation and cumulative distribution function are related to sample size. Sample size can be chosen to attain a certain expected width in the confidence interval for the standard deviation. Alternatively, sample size can be selected to achieve a desired probability of having the width of the confidence interval smaller than a predetermined upper bound.
