HETEROTOPIC TRANSPLANTATION OF A REATTACHED DIGIT

Reattachment of amputated digits is now commonplace. However, when the reattached part does not function satisfactorily, it may actually be a hindrance. Such useless parts can be used for reconstruction of other deficient parts to produce a better-functioning hand unit. We present a case in which an already reattached but shortened and functionless index finger was transferred to an amputated and functionally deficient ring finger to improve the ring finger both anatomically and functionally. Of note, although the hand's form and function are improved, the twice-reattached digit has less sensibility and more cold intolerance than a separate, once attached digit on the same hand. © 1995 American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
