Island Creek Coal Co. is developing six mining areasin the No. 3 Pocahontas coal seam, Buchanan County, Va. The coal bed averages 54 in. thick and is covered by overburden up to 2600 ft. thusrepresenting some of the deepest bituminous coal mines in this country. Methane liberation from the seam and superjacent strata ranged in one of the mines between 9 and 14 million cfd. Paper describes planning of the ventilation system for longwall mining combined with vertical ventilating boreholes designed to exhaust methane through the mine return air shafts and methane drainage boreholes.
