Transformation of RE2Fe17Bx (RE = Nd, Dy) Metastable Phase Crystallized from Undercooled Melt

8Nd-2Dy-85Fe-5B droplets were containerlessly solidified using a 26 m drop tube. The substitution of Dy for Nd in the 10Nd-85Fe-5B sample suppressed to the formation of the alpha-Fe phase and promoted the crystalization of the RE2Fe17Bx metastable phase. The sample with a diameter range of 1200 mu m to 1500 mu m mainly consisted of the RE2Fe17Bx metastable phase. The metastable phase was partially decomposed into the alpha-Fe and RE2Fe14B phase during the post-solidification cooling stage. When the sample was heated, the metastable phase decomposed into the alpha-Fe and RE2Fe14B phases at around 1140 K which was 40 K higher than that in the 10Nd-85Fe-5B ternary alloy.
