摘要
A new procedure is described by which the residual stress in the cladding and base alloy of clad materials can be measured simultaneously with X-rays. When a hole is drilled in this material, the stresses are tensile at the hole edge and remain so on countersinking the hole. The residual stresses in riveted lap joints of this material are those predicted for a stressed hole, i.e. tensile if the hole wall is stressed elastically, and compressive if the hole wall is cold worked. The stresses can be lower after riveting in the soft cladding than in the base alloy of clad aluminum alloy 2024-T3, indicating now of the cladding relative to the base. Lf compressive stresses are desired, care is needed in choosing the riveting force, and the X-ray technique can provide confirmation of the condition of this loading.
