Studies of the corrosion of pure iron showed green rust, approximately Fe42+Fe23+(OH)12(Cl,OH)2, was a stable corrosion product at high pH and low E(h) in the presence of chloride. The structure, constitution, preparation, and characterization of green rust was reviewed. A diagram relevant to the corrosion of iron in cement, constructed for pH 12, showed stability fields of green rust, alpha, delta FeO(OH), and betaFeO(OH,Cl). Overall implications of chloride to the corrosion process were investigated.
