Occupational monitoring for radiation protection purposes has been performed for many years. However, technological difficulties still exist in the measurement of the small dose equivalent values encountered in radiation protection. In addition, the measurement of neutron and beta particle sources can present special difficulties if small uncertainties are required. International intercomparisons conducted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have demonstrated that some dosimetry systems exhibited significant differences between the dose delivered by the irradiation laboratory and the dose assessed by the dosimetry service. Accreditation of dosimetry services may be one way to ensure a certain level of performance for these services.
