A three-component version of the continuum Gaussian model has tricritical points. These are studied by calculations based on the virial equation of state up to tenth order for dimensionalities of 2- 1 0. At high dimensionalities (d greater-than-or-equal-to 4) the tricritical points are certainly 'normal' or asymmetrical. At d = 3 the evidence is that they are also normal, but at d = 2 and (probably) at d = 2.5 there appears to be a single 'anomalous' tricritical point. A borderline dimensionality of between 2.5 and 3 agrees with the results of parallel work on the three-state Potts lattice model. Both models appear to belong to the same universality class.
