Cuboidal samples of sand have been tested in plane strain with confining pressures in the range 5-1000 lb/sq. in. The results refer mainly to quartz sand, although tests on bronze ballotini and crushed feldspar are included to illustrate the generality of the treatment. The stress dilatancy equation is seen to provide a particularly simple flow rule and family of plastic potentials, which are sensibly independent of the density of the material and the confining pressure. The form of the yield criterion is investigated but it does not appear to coincide with the plastic potential function. © 1969, Thomas Telford Ltd. All rights reserved.
