BEYOND DISSENT: THE HUMAN RIGHTS OF WOMEN IN PROSTITUTION CONTEXTS

In the last thirty years, the debates about prostitution have been presented as a confrontation between two antagonist expressions of the feminist movements, which are known as abolitionist and pro rights feminism. Nonetheless, behind those discussions, there are a great variety of meanings and a common concern related to the violation of the prostitutes' human rights. Beyond the dissent on the prostitution's concept and its meanings (at social and individual level), this article explores the main contributions of the feminist movements, in order to better understand this complex phenomenon and its strategies for the vindication, recognition and protection of women's human rights.
