Critical use of media in higher education

We live in a digital age where the use of technology as a ubiquitous communication medium is in all activities and areas of our life, including higher education. We are usually connected by means of several mobile devices. We assume that we are well informed about what happens in both our closest and more distant environments. However, we rarely focus on exploring the features and reliability of the sources. Hence, the development of media competence is especially relevant at university level. This paper presents an exploratory study on media competence development carried out on university teachers. In view of these results, an educational intervention programme, largely pursuing the promotion of educommunication based on reflection on the former programme, was designed. The methodology was developed with didactic units according to the Model for Development and Assessment of Academic Skills (MDECA). The process was carried out applying the method for the systematisation of educational experiences. The experience highlighted the possibility of strengthening media competence in university teachers in the Northern region of Mexico, as well as promoting other features of teaching competence.
