摘要：
The civilian radioactive waste management program in the United States is characterizing a candidate spent nuclear fuel repository location within the unsaturated zone in an and desert environment. The site location in an area of moderate seismicity and nearby prior volcanism presents some unique technical challenges. These challenges include determining the potential for volcanic activities to disrupt the repository, estimating the seismic hazard for surface and underground facilities, understanding ground water movement through the site, particularly the relative role of fractures in the flow system, and predicting the effect of waste-induced heating on the repository system.
