摘要
HDTV warrants a better sound system than that currently available with conventional television, viz. two-channel stereo. This paper looks at the options for improvements, both for the basic sound service and for the additional sound services. A five-channel surround sound service is currently being considered amongst various international groups as the most complex member of the sound hierarchy. Supporting evidence from subjective tests is reported Compatibility with simpler sound systems is also discussed. Additional services such as multi-language commentary and clean dialogue for the hearing impaired are described.
