Blot hybridization experiments showed that DNA sequences of eukaryotic 18S and 28S rRNAs are capable of specific binding with mRNA. This was demonstrated for the mRNA of the mouse p53 protein gene. In experiments with in vitro transcribed RNAs of some genes, it was also shown that the ribosomal RNAs (18S and 28S) themselves are capable of forming 18S RNA-mRNA and 28S RNA-mRNA complexes, but they do not form such complexes with the antisense transcripts of these genes. Such a specific binding between two types of molecules indicates that they contain segments with complementary sequences.
