A particular mesophase pitch of 100% anisotropy prepared from methylnaphthalene using HF/BF3 spun through the slit-shaped nozzle, stabilized in air under strain, carbonized at 1300-degrees-C and graphitized at 2500-degrees-C into very thin slit-shaped carbon and graphite tapes of 1.6-mu-m thickness and 12-mu-m width. The graphite tape provided excellent mechanical properties of tensile strength of 365 kg/mm2, Young's modulus of 8.1x10(4) kg/mm2, and compressive strength of 71 kg/mm2.
