Sexuality in pregnancy: counseling for woman and for the couple.

Studies about pregnancy and sexuality are very scanty, furthermore data available show a slight reduction of sexual activity during first trimester, a wide variability during second trimester and a strong reduction during third trimester. A large number of women feel the begin of pregnancy with anxiety and like a heavy emotional condition, thus it has a negative influence on sexuality. During pregnancy is rather common to register a reduction of sexual desire, satisfaction, frequency of sexual intercourse, even if there is a minority of women in which there is an increase. The fear of partner to provoke any damage to the baby is one of main reason conditioning sexual intercourse during pregnancy. Advise on sexual life during pregnancy should be an important step during routinary counselling of first pregnancy visit done by every gynaecologist.
