A study was conducted to demonstrate the use of electrodeposition as a tool for manufacturing complex 3D battery architectures. The process can be used as a tool for manufacturing complex 3D battery architectures through the 3D-micro-battery (3D-MB) approaches. The 3D-MB approaches had the potential to be four general categories, such as interdigitated-, trench-, and sponge-type structures. These categories differ significantly with respect to architecture, materials, and synthesis techniques. There are also additional microbattery designs, based on the use of micro-channels plates or microstructured Li 0.35La0.55TiO3 templates. The 3D-MB approaches also differ widely with respect to dimensionality and most of the devices can be classified as either micro- or nano-architectures.
