摘要
From a comparative perspective, the article focuses on how the Ottoman Empire (1299-1923) and Qajar Iran (1726-1925) had access to the modem world following 19th century changes. It studies the process through which the concept of "Identity" shifted from "subjects" to "citizens". However, the elaboration of a patriotic discourse did not prevent the emergence of the concepts of "Ummah" in the Ottoman State and "Wilayatulfaqih" in Iran.
