摘要：

The veterinary surgeon must reconcile three conflicting commitments: to the animals in his care, to his clients and to himself. This paper defines criteria for analysis of animal welfare and considers the economic and moral arguments governing decisions as to the quality of life for farm animals and nets, conduct in the abattoir and the practice of non-therapeutic surgery. The objective throughout is to achieve solutions that ave lair to all parties.
