Critical concentrations of impurity found to quench a He-Ne laser operating at 6328 Å, have been determined using mass spectrometer techniques. Within the limits of experimental error, this critical value was found to be 7·59 parts of an impurity (of mean molecular weight 19·1 and mean ionization potential 14·6 ev) per 100 parts of Ne in a He-Ne fill of ratio 8: 1, for typical input powers.
