Building Relationships between Adults with Intellectual Disabilities and Community Members: Strategies, Art, and Policy

摘要
This article summarises research about the work of connecting individuals with intellectual disabilities with community members. It is intended to provide practical advice for a wide range of audiences who want to increase social relationships and community inclusion, including families, service providers, and policymakers Promoting social inclusion goes far beyond physical inclusion. Sections of the article address: (a) reasons why relationships with community members are important; (b) a summary of various approaches that have been used, which have focused on adults with intellectual disabilities; (c) the art of connecting, including subtle and sensitive skills necessary for successful efforts; and (d) policy implications.
