The retrospective study of birth asphyxia was carried out at Sena Hospital from October 1, 1999 to September 30, 2007. There were 628 out of 13,918 cases or 4.5% of pregnant women who delivered newborns with an Apgar score <= 7 at 1 minute. The data was analyzed in terms of frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean and standard deviation. The study revealed that the percentage of birth asphyxia in 1999 was 13.5%. The Sena obstetric patient care team was set up in 2000 to improve this outcome through the clinical practice guidelines for pregnant women and labor management, antenatal care, delivery and neonatal resuscitation team. The percentage of birth asphyxia in 2000 and 2001 were decreased to 6.6% and 3.4%, respectively. In 2007, the rate of neonatal birth asphyxia was decreased to 2.8%. Most of the cases found were mild and moderate birth asphyxia which was 94.1%.
