Apart from their use as an information storage medium, pieces of magnetic tape are used in barrier control cards, train tickets and control mechanisms actuated by coded commands. An inexpensive and non-destructive method for the quality control of such tapes has been devised. The relevant parameters are the saturated remanent magnetic moment M(sat) and remanent coercivity H(cr) (defined as the reverse magnetic field required to reduce a saturated remanent magnetic moment M(sat) to zero). A novel design of record/replay magnetic heads in used to display the hysteresis loop of the remanent magnetic moment M(rem) versus the applied magnetic field H on a microcomputer.
