摘要
Since its first observations, optical bistability has attracted a great amount of interest and has given rise to numerous experimental and theoretical studies. It has been realized that optical bistability is only one of the many phenomena exhibited by Kerr-type resonators. In this paper, the main aspects of optical bistability are reviewed. Some 'exotic' behaviour of these so-called bistable systems such as self-pulsing, chaos, strange patterns... is also covered. The emphasis is placed on a unified view of these devices. In addition to the fundamental questions which they raise, one of the main interests of these systems is that they allow all-optical interactions with important potential applications in all-optical signal processing.
