The significant demographic shift towards the nonmetropolitan residence of the elderly combined with an increased awareness of the inadequate services available for the rural elderly, has increased demand for service development in rural areas. The identification of effective strategies for delivering community services to the rural elderly will depend, in part, upon knowledge of the aging process in nonmetropditan areas. Five issues are presented to reflect the major implications of the available research for the practitioner responsible for planning community services for the rural elderly. © 1979 Oxford University Press.
