AN INVESTIGATION OF THE STRUCTURAL UNITS IN SODIUM DISILICATE GLASS - A 2-D SI-29 NMR-STUDY

In this paper a two-dimensional magic-angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment is applied to the study of sodium disilicate glass. In this experiment, the MAS spectrum and the component powder patterns are resolved in the F2 and F1 dimensions respectively. Analysis of the data obtained indicates that two Q(3) species of different chemical shift anisotropy exist in the glass; this information could not have been obtained from a simple one-dimensional experiment. These results indicate that this experimental method will have general application in addressing many of the outstanding problems concerning the structure of multicomponent silica-based glasses.
