OVERNUTRITION AND IMMUNE-RESPONSES

Overnutrition has become an important and widely debated issue, and obesity is one of the extensively studied aspects of overnutrition. Except for a few nutrients like vitamin C, excessive intake of most macro- and micronutrients can have adverse effects on the immune system. Various fatty acids, cholesterol and lipoproteins have immunomodulatory potential. There is increasing proof that besides effects on immune function, overnutrition increases risk of cancer and infection both in animals and humans. For most nutrients, moderation in intake is desirable for optimal immunity.
