摘要
The aim of the present study was to investigate the surface wear phenomenon known as banding which is one of the major wear problems occurring on hot rolling rolls, and a major cause of roll surface deterioration and the subsequent need for roll regrinding. Two sets of hot rolling rolls used in the first finishing pass in the hot rolling of flat carbon steel sheets were characterized using advanced techniques of electron microscopy and spectroscopy. Thermomechanical fatigue of the roll surface due to continuous temperature cycling and the mechanical stresses inherent in the rolling process are the causes of the most severe wear associated with banding. Oxide clad on to the roll surface helps protect it against abrasive wear, but in the long run cannot compete with the deteriorating forces of the thermomechanical stresses and resultant crack systems.
