CHEMICAL ORDERING IN SOME AMORPHOUS ALLOYS

Measurements of the glass transition temperature Tg, the temperature Tx for the initiation of crystallization and the temperature Tp at maximum heat evolution during crystallization were obtained by differential scanning calorimetry of amorphous alloys in the series Fe100-xBx, (Fe0.5Ni0.5)100-x and (Fe1-x-Nix)80B20. The values of Tg, Tx and Tp for crystallization to the body-centered tetragonal Fe3B phase all incresed with increasing boron in the alloy series Fe100-xBx. In the series (Fe0.5Ni0.5)100-xBx Tg, Tx and Tp for crystallization to the Ni3B-type phase all decreased with increasing boron. Increasing the fraction of nickel in the series (Fe1-x-Nix)80B20 lowered Tg, Tx and Tp for crystallization. The effect of nickel reflects a chemical ordering between the nickel and boron atoms that decreases viscosity and the energy for hole formation. With increasing nickel and boron both the glass transition temperature and the temperature for crystallization are reduced. © 1979.
