The objective of this investigation was to study the effects of heat radiation on polymer composites. Laminates of carbon/polyetheretherketone (PEEK), carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy were exposed to heat intensities of between 8 and 60 kW m-2 on one side. Time to the appearance of visible defects, deterioration in mechanical properties, temperature increase and mass loss were studied. A simple relationship was established between time to appearance of defects and heat intensity, laminate thickness and type of material. The deterioration in mechanical properties in the PEEK laminates was probably caused by delamination, whereas chemical degradation and delamination were the most important factors in the epoxy laminates. No deterioration in mechanical properties was observed before visible defects appeared on the unidirectional laminates.
