Adsorption from dilute binary aqueous solutions of nonelectrolytes on active carbon is looked upon as a displacement process and examined by means of the DR equation, modified by the use of appropriate activity coefficients. The role of the structure of the adsorbed water phase is discussed and the extent of micropore filling, shown by several solutes, is correlated by means of a factor involving the parachor values for water and the particular solute. Integral free energies of displacement, calculated from the adsorption data, and integral enthalpies of displacement, measured with a flow calorimeter, are compared. © 1993 Academic Press, Inc.
