The used method of conceptual analysis allowed to consider the cognition process of the concept's meaning "COGNITION"and record the result in the formalized semantic language. This method included the following stages: etymological analysis of concept lexemes; analysis of key words definitions that are the semantics of the concept; the construction of the concept's field model, consisting of kernel, close periphery and far periphery. The historical-etymological analysis using data from the etymological dictionaries of the English language allowed us to understand the historical development of the concept "COGNITION" in English. As a result of the etymological, lexico-semantic analysis some extra features of the concept which are situational in character come to light. This article represents the structure of this concept, reflecting his vision of a native English language culture. The article presents a field model of the concept "COGNITION" in the English language. This structure was based on the analysis of dictionary names, concepts, compilations of contextual usage examples. The author argues that the concept "COGNITION" is multidimensional, semantically extensive concept. The semantic field of the concept "COGNITION" is a hierarchical structure, having a single kernel, represented by the lexeme cognition. All other representatives of the concept, describing the different situations of knowledge are with kernel lexeme interconnected. The noun "cognition" being kernel lexeme of the concept "COGNITION" was developed in the framework of the etymological meaning "acquaintance, notion, knowledge". The author comes to the conclusion that the interpretation of the concept "COGNITION" in the English linguistic tradition had a motivating sign "knowledge".
