A wide-ranging neutron scattering study has been performed of the atomic and magnetic structure of amorphous Dy7Ni3 by use of the double-null isotopic substitution technique. This technique is shown to be very powerful. In Dy7Ni3 the nickel atoms, considered as hard spheres, are close to each other but not touching. The atomic structure is thus more ordered than for a random close packing of hard spheres. The nickel magnetic moments are quenched and there is a tendency for parallel alignment between neighbouring dysprosium moments. The indications are that magnetic anisotropy is low.
