The linewidth W has been computed for various absorber thicknesses. It is assumed that both the source and the absorbing material have the natural linewidth Γ. Then, for an absorber containing n nuclei (of the resonant species) per unit area, the formula W = 2Γ(1 + 0.1288t + 4.733 × 10-3t2 - 9.21 × 10-4t3+ 3.63×10-5t4) approximates the computed values, where t = nf′σres. The values of W given by this formula are accurate to better than 0.15% for 0≦t≦12. © 1968.
