In this paper, open-channel flow is analyzed using the linearized St. Venant equations. A method is presented to del ive an approximation model for an open channel with backwater effects; the approximation model consists of functions that allow the application of effective control synthesis methods. The accuracy of the approximation models is demonstrated by two examples.
