A calorimetric technique is described for the determination of the absolute heat capacity of small samples with weights of a few mg in the temperature range 0.06 - 4 K. Heat is deposited in the samples by absorption of optical light pulses from a light emitting diode (LED), which eliminates the need for a separate heater on the sample. A further reduction of the addenda is achieved by using a thin film Au - Ge thermometer. The proper operation of the calorimeter is checked by measurements on a small Cu sample weighing 30 mg.
